Long ago, deep beneath the mountains, there existed a prosperous dwarf kingdom called Kazad-Nar. The dwarves were renowned for their skill in crafting precious gems, creating intricate mechanisms, and building majestic halls. However, their wealth and prosperity attracted the envy of their neighbors—humans and elves. To protect their treasures, the dwarves created a complex system of underground tunnels, traps, and secret passages.
The kingdom was ruled by the wise King Thorbin Ironhammer, whose family traced its lineage back to the first dwarves who founded Kazad-Nar. However, in recent years, discord had begun to spread throughout the kingdom. Some dwarves, dissatisfied with the strict laws and traditions, started sowing unrest. Among them stood out a young engineer named Garrick Brassstring, who dreamed of new technologies and openness to the world. He was supported by many young dwarves, but the elders saw this as a threat to centuries-old traditions.
One day, a terrible event occurred in the kingdom: the legendary relic known as the Heart of the Mountain—a massive ruby said to be the soul of the kingdom—was stolen from the royal treasury. Its disappearance threatened to disrupt the balance of the underground world. King Thorbin called a council, where it was decided to launch an investigation. However, each of those present had their own secrets, and no one wanted to reveal the truth.
King Thorbin Ironhammer — A wise but aging ruler. He knows his time is running out and fears for the future of the kingdom. His secret: he has long been aware of the discontent among the dwarves but hesitated to act, fearing it would worsen the situation. Additionally, he secretly suffers from an illness that is slowly sapping his strength.
Garrick Brassstring — A young and ambitious engineer dreaming of change. His secret: he has been secretly meeting with elves to exchange technology for knowledge, which is strictly forbidden by dwarf laws. Garrick believes this is the only way for the dwarves to survive in a changing world.
Lyra Stonegrim — The keeper of the treasury and a loyal servant of the king. Her secret: she is in love with Garrick and has been helping him access the treasury to study ancient mechanisms. Lyra also knows about secret passages that even the elders are unaware of.
Balin Firebeard — An elder, a conservative, and a fierce opponent of Garrick. His secret: he has long dreamed of overthrowing the king and taking his place but fears losing the support of the people. Balin has also been secretly funding a group of discontented dwarves who are ready to stage a rebellion.
Nora Silverthread — A young dwarf maiden, daughter of one of the elders. Her secret: she accidentally overheard a conversation about a conspiracy against the king but is too afraid to speak up. Nora has also been secretly studying ancient manuscripts that may shed light on the true nature of the Heart of the Mountain.
At the council, the king announces that the investigation has been entrusted to Lyra Stonegrim, as the most loyal and knowledgeable about the treasury. However, everyone present understands that the clues could lead to them. Lyra begins her investigation by examining the treasury. She finds signs of a break-in, but they are too precise for an outsider. She also notices that the mechanisms protecting the treasury were disabled from the inside.
Clue One: On the floor of the treasury, Lyra finds a scrap of fabric similar to the material used for engineers' clothing. This leads her to suspect Garrick. She recalls seeing him in similar clothing shortly before the theft.
Clue Two: Nora Silverthread secretly passes Lyra a note stating that Balin Firebeard recently inquired about the treasury's blueprints. Nora also mentions seeing Balin speaking with suspicious dwarves in a dark corner of the hall.
Clue Three: Lyra finds traces of elven pollen in the tunnel leading to the treasury. This points to a connection with the elves. She remembers that Garrick recently returned from a "research trip" about which no one knew the details.
Clue Four: King Thorbin recalls hearing strange noises in his chambers on the night of the theft but dismissed them. He also notices that his personal seal, which opens the secret passages, had been slightly moved.
Clue Five: Lyra discovers that one of the treasury's mechanisms had been altered. Someone had added a new mechanism that allowed the defenses to be disabled from the inside. This suggests that the thief was not only familiar with the mechanisms but also had access to the blueprints.
Lyra gathers all the suspects in the throne room. She presents the clues and asks each of them to explain their actions:
